Opening: Saturday 13 October, 12-4pmFOLLOWING the success of Sarah Bowman’s solo exhibition “Room With A View” last year at White Space, demand for her distinctive paintings has continued to rise. One of the south-west’s most popular and collected young artists, Sarah’s work has gently evolved in the last twelve months with an ever-maturing palette and a confidence in execution.
Continuing her exploration of still life set before an open window and an idyllic landscape, Sarah returns to her beloved Scilly Isles, Cornish harbours and Andalucian hills with twenty new paintings.
Sarah often turns to the Scilly Isles to find subject matter for the backgrounds of her work. The endless variety of island views and sub-tropical plants is a perfect basis for her imagined compositions. Sarah explains: “My paintings have more of a 'sense' of a place than a specific representation – echoing a memory or something I've been drawn to whilst out exploring the island, for example the plants that cling to the weathered surfaces of the stone walls or pebbles and shells I've trawled the beach for.
“I never begin a painting knowing exactly how it will end up. They start with the landscape and the windowsill or the table and the rest emerges later, the objects placed last, perhaps a curtain will slip in at he side as if a breeze floated in. Each element of the composition is a reaction to the last thing painted. I like to work on at least four paintings at a time so that they stay fresh."
