Colin Carruthers

When Colin is not painting in his studio, he likes to draw inspiration from trips to the countryside and coast. He enjoys the experience of being outdoors and emotionally connecting with the landscape and its surroundings. The light, weather and flora greatly inform his practice as a painter and his paintings are a desire to capture something about the essence of what it feels like to be there.

“My first trip to Devon,” says Colin, “was as a ten-year old visiting my aunt and uncle who lived in Paignton. So, with the prospect of producing some paintings for an exhibition here in Totnes, it was great to re-visit the area and to explore some of this beautiful coastline. I managed to combine a few days of walking and sketching on location at Slapton Sands, Hallsands, Beesands and Start Point. Breathtaking scenery on my journey to sandy coves and shingle beaches, amidst amazing arrays of cliff top wild flowers have provided great inspiration for my latest series of oil paintings.”
