Born 1944. James Tatum moved from Canada to the UK in 1987. Although he has drawn and painted all his life, it is only in recent years that it has become a full time occupation, following a long career in industrial design and engineering. Largely self-taught but with lessons from the dynamic David Tress, Tatum posesses an outsider's eye. He is an exciting find. Never afraid to experiment or try new working methods, his work is full of energy, light and atmosphere.
Working from his 14th century stone barn studio, Tatum explores the local landscape in a variety of mediums, oil, ink, acrylic, tempera. Paintings can start from quick, rough sketches. Back in the studio these may be painted over in a very abstract fashion, before more representative elements are restored.
