Own Art

Mary Sumner

Much of Mary Sumner's latest work is based on the mid-Devon landscape where she has lived for over 20 years. Sketched observations on her daily walks provide much of the inspiration for her pictures - farm landscapes, birdlife, as well as the coastal views of the south-west.

Over time Mary’s whimsical, naive style has evolved. Her detailed and intensely coloured paintings capture glimpsed moments of the English countryside, its coastal towns, rolling hills and animals going about their business.

Mary Sumner was born in rural Northamptonshire in 1957 and was schooled locally before studying at Northampton School of Art and West Surrey School of Art and then later at Bristol University.
