Own Art

Susan Deakin

"My work is about plants, and about landscape and its elements. I use various media to make images inspired by these subjects: paint, charcoal, pastel - but printmaking of several sorts has been my chief occupation for many years.

"Working at home in a small studio, I have my own press to make monotypes, drypoints, linocuts, woodcuts etc. The medium is chosen to suit the subject and the eventual setting for the piece, if it is known.

"Walking in the countryside around my home provides much of the material for my prints and drawings. The particular landscape of the South Hams is a recurring theme for my drypoint engravings and woodcuts. I enjoy the way the land seems fitted together from its various elements, the trees, hedges and fields, rather like a jigsaw puzzle."

Susan has been a member of The Devon Guild of Craftsmen for 20 years, and is currently co-curating an exhibition there of member's work, entitled Carpe Diem.
