"My artistic practice is rooted in observation. I draw inspiration from the ever-shifting light and colour of the South Downs landscapes around my Hampshire home, and from studio-based still life compositions. Recent travels to Spain and Greece have become a new source of inspiration, bringing richer tones into my palette and a fresh way of seeing.
"The process begins with charcoal and gouache sketches, often made en plein air to capture the essential qualities and atmosphere of each scene. These studies are the foundation for larger works, which I develop and refine in the studio.
"I've been sketching outside on my recent travels, then carrying those studies back to the studio to work up paintings. I'm inspired by the colours and memories held in those drawings, and I'm endlessly interested in colour and form. The light and landscape of the Mediterranean have brought a real warmth into my work, and it's still finding its way into my oil paintings.
“My still life compositions often start with a carefully considered palette of harmonious colours. From there, I explore the dynamic relationships between colour, composition and form and I work spontaneously and intuitively. I don't aim to create literal representations of places or objects. My intention is to make painterly, lyrical works that show my emotional and sensory response to the world."
