Sarah Bowman

"I never begin a painting knowing exactly how it will end up. They start with the landscape and the windowsill or the table and the rest emerges later, the objects placed last, perhaps a curtain will slip in at the side as if a breeze floated in. Each element of the composition is a reaction to the last thing painted. I like to work on at a few paintings at a time so that they stay fresh." - Sarah Bowman.

"Landscape is rightly seen as the defining factor in the art of St Ives. Still Life however often accompanied landscape in terms of the window view with jug, bowl of flowers or windowsill trinket. It formed a distinct strand, epitomised in the work of Christopher Wood, Winifred and Ben Nicholson and their daughter Kate and Bryan Pearce. So influential was the soulful fusion of the domestic and outside worlds that this quintessential manner with its post cubist or faux naif affectation inspired artists well beyond Cornwall. The hugely popular work of the three Marys - Fedden, Newcomb and Potter - consciously drew on this tradition as did the work of younger practitioners Sarah Bowman and Elaine Pamphilon.
- Peter Davies, 'St Ives 1975-2005: Art Colony in Transition'

Sarah has exhibited in several one and two-woman exhibitions as well as many group exhibitions including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. In 2005 she won the Mary Fedden Award at the Royal West of England Academy.
